The brief

The front of this Peterborough home was split between grass and ageing tarmac, with a driveway that no longer suited the household's needs. The owners wanted two things: more usable parking space, and a front garden that looked as good as the rest of the property. They asked Ambleside to extend the driveway across the full frontage and give it a clean, modern finish.

The solution

After discussing options with the homeowners, we recommended block paving. It's a choice that earns its popularity: individual blocks are exceptionally hard-wearing under vehicle weight, they resist cracking far better than a single poured surface, and if a block is ever damaged or stained it can be lifted and replaced without disturbing the rest of the driveway. It also opens up real design freedom.

The owners chose a grey block laid across the main driveway, framed with a stone trim edging that lifts the whole design and ties in neatly with the property's exterior.

Drainage was built into the design from the start. We installed gravel borders where appropriate, allowing rainwater to flow away naturally rather than pooling on the surface. This protects the paving over the long term and keeps the driveway safe and dry in wet weather.

Ambleside Property Maintenance project managed the job from start to finish, with the work itself delivered by our Ambleside Approved Contractors. One point of contact, clear communication throughout, and consistent standards on site every day.

The challenge

A manhole cover sat directly across the boundary between the gravel and the block paving, exactly where a clumsy or rushed job would be most visible. Rather than treating it as an obstacle, our team worked the design around it, precisely cutting and setting the blocks so the cover sits flush within the pattern. The result is a continuous, considered finish where the cover blends into the driveway rather than interrupting it.

The result

A driveway that's larger, more practical and far better looking than what it replaced. The grey paving and stone trim give the front of the home a timeless, welcoming look, executed to perfection. The drainage keeps it that way in all weathers, and every detail, right down to the manhole cover, has been finished to the standard our customers expect.
