A Peterborough homeowner received a letter from Peterborough City Council flagging the hedge in her front garden, which had grown significantly over the public pathway — a pathway due to be re-laid. With the work beyond what she was able to tackle herself, she got in touch with Ambleside Property Maintenance to get it sorted.

The Brief

We met with the homeowner to assess the front garden and talk through what she wanted from the space. The hedge wasn't just a compliance problem; it was an ongoing maintenance burden. Together, we agreed the best long-term solution was to remove it entirely and replace it with a new low-level fence, cutting out the upkeep while keeping the property looking smart and preserving a sense of privacy.

The Work

Ambleside Property Maintenance organised the full project, with our Ambleside Approved Contractors completing every stage from first cut to final fence post.

Hedge removal - The hedge had established a substantial root system after years of growth, so removal started with cutting back the above-ground growth to make the site manageable before the root ball and stump were dug out and extracted. The surrounding soil was cleared and levelled, and the boundary line was reinstated ready for the new fence. All cut material, root waste and debris was removed from site as the work progressed, leaving the garden clear and tidy rather than piled with green waste.

Fence installation - With the site cleared, our contractors set out the new boundary line and installed concrete posts at consistent spacing for a stable, long-lasting fit. The low-level fence panels were then fitted level and secure along the full boundary, positioned to keep the pathway clear per the council's request while still giving the homeowner a defined edge to her garden and a degree of privacy from the street.

Finishing up - Once the fence was in, the team carried out a final check for level and stability, tidied the surrounding beds and paths, and removed all remaining waste and materials from the property, leaving nothing for the homeowner to deal with.

The whole job was completed in 4 days, resolving the council's concerns well ahead of the pathway works and giving the homeowner a tidier, lower-maintenance front garden.
